How do I fill the bags?

Each bag is designed to hold a single waste stream. Please make sure to fill the bag with only the specified waste stream and avoid mixing different waste types. Seal the bag using the self-sealing pull-off strip. If you are using this bag for the Pet Food Packaging Waste-Stream, and make sure to check off the “Pet Food Packaging” checkbox on the front of the Zero Waste Bag.

Vokashi Intro Consultation OfferHow can I order the Vokashi Zero Waste bags?

You can order the Vokashi Zero Waste bags right here from Vokashi directly or from an authorized "Vokashi Community Zero-Waste Collector" in your area.

What do I do when my bag is full?

When the Zero Waste Bag is full, seal it, then log in to your Vokashi account to either buy replacement bags (which included a pick-up of full bags and a drop-off of fresh bags) or pay for an extra pick-up. It's most economical and reduces your carbon footprint to buy plenty of bags and wait until you have several full bags before you buy more and/or schedule a pick-up, as there's a fee to come out to your location.

How much do you charge to Pick-up Full Bags and/or Drop-off Fresh Ones?

Collection Fee: We charge a single fee for dropping off, picking up, or both (Collection Fee) based on the borough:

  • Brooklyn - $75

  • Queens - $100

I'm a Vokashi Compost Customer, Can I give my Bags to the Compost Collection Driver?

YES! If you are a Vokashi Composting Customer, give the Zero Waste Bags to the Vokashi team member, following your normal collection procedure (e.g. at your doorstep), and we’ll pick it up at the scheduled time. When you receive your compost collection email, kindly reply to let us know how many of each bag you are having collected. Ask your Vokashi representative if any added Collection Fee will apply (vehicles have limited space).

How do I indicate the waste stream on the bag?

After buying a bag, simply place a check mark on the outside of the bag within the designated white box that indicates the name of the waste stream.

How do I arrange for a pickup of the filled bags?

If you ordered the bags directly from Vokashi, you could arrange for a pickup by Vokashi itself, and they will charge a pick-up fee based on the borough. If you purchased the bags from a Vokashi Community Zero-Waste Collector, they would handle the pickup, and the pickup fee will be arranged in advance or negotiated directly with them.

Can I reuse the bags?

The Vokashi Zero Waste bags are designed for a single use. Once the bags are filled and collected, they will be properly recycled along with the waste stream they contain.

What happens to the waste streams in the bags?

The cost of recycling the waste stream is included in the price of the bags. Vokashi ensures that the waste is properly processed and recycled through our TerraCycle partner's waste management system. TerraCycle guarantees that they recycle all compliant materials that are collected. The items are received by material recovery partners, where they are sorted into individual material components. Each material is then recycled into a raw format that can be used to make new products.

How are the "Cigarette Butts" items I send to Vokashi Recycled by TerraCycle?

The butts are shredded and cleaned to remove contaminants. Then they are separated into tobacco, paper, and cellulose acetate filters. Tobacco and paper are dried and mixed with other organic materials to create compost. The filters are dried and turned into a powder that’s used to make plastic products.
