Zero-Waste, A Challenge Every Day
It feels like only yesterday that Vokashi took part in Mayor de Blasio’s Zero-Waste Challenge of 2016. Running from February to June, it was a call for New York City businesses to reduce their landfill waste by 50%. In addition to increased recycling and donation of leftover food to charities, many participating organizations took the step of composting their organic waste.
Naturally, the Environmental Protection Agency was fully on board with the Challenge. They had partnered with Vokashi in 2014 to install Vokashi buckets in their Manhattan offices and even visited our compost site at the Marine Park Golf Course. “We are pleased to know that our food scraps are being managed so easily and completely,” said Dale Carpenter, Chief of Sustainable Materials Management.
The Challenge may be over, but the EPA has stuck with us, contributing on average nearly half a ton of organic waste every month via our familiar green buckets. Of course, their commitment to reducing waste shouldn’t be surprising to those who know the 46-year-long history of this influential organization. From cleaner air and water, to more efficient cars and appliances, to better regulations of hazards such as radiation and pesticides, the EPA has had an incredibly positive effect on society.
We’re proud to partner with an organization that has made such a difference to the environment and the public health.
