Joseph Daniel Wilson Memorial Garden
Founded by veteran community gardeners, Cindy and Haja Worley, the Joseph Daniel Wilson garden at 219 West 123rd Street received one of Scott Stringer’s composting grants in 2011.
Vokashi visited the garden to show group how to make the EM-1 inoculated bran needed to ferment food scraps. Vokashi also provided 50 pounds of the bran for the gardeners to use as they collected their scraps over the winter. In the spring of this year, a gardener trenched the fermented food waste into paths and plots to enrich the soil of this very shady garden.
Other gardens that received similar composting grants or began practice of community collection of fermented food waste are:
- Carrie McCracken TRUCE Community Garden at West 121st and St. Nick’s Avenue;
- Morris Jumel Community Garden at 457 West 162nd Street; and
- DeColores Community Garden at 311 East 8th Street.
