Winning Project: Creating Soil with Fermented Food Waste

At the 2013 New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF) Nicholas Lee, an Environmental Sciences senior at the Midwood High School at Brooklyn College Science Research program, received the Environmental Quest: Michael G. Mann Award. Congratulations Nicholas!

The award is for projects that "promote the objectives and mission of Environmental Quest; to bring awareness to the man-made and natural environment". His mentor in the project was Zhongqi (Joshua) Cheng of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Brooklyn College (ESAC). Nicholas interned at ESAC where he conducted his research and much of his data was collected at the Vokashi Compost Demonstration Site.

Vokashi supports and encourages the collaborative efforts of students and others who want to research and explore the sciences involved in food waste issues.
