Climate Action Starts at Home

by | Sep 21, 2020 | Community Page | 0 comments

“Climate Week NYC”, which is hosted in association with the United Nations and the City of New York, IS HERE!

The climate crisis can be overwhelming and calls for systemic change.

We can’t rely on others to fix this for us: we can continue to take our own actions, at ever increasing frequencies. One thing WE can all do right now, is to reduce the waste we create in our homes.

Throughout this week — in concert with a coalition of like minded organizations — we’re going to be cutting through the smoke and haze, resulting from our centuries long missteps, to bring to you simple actions that you can take immediately.

The more of us that commit, the more it makes a difference.

Today’s challenge: #ClimateActionStartsatHome

Right now, we’re challenging you and your friends to publicly commit to replacing one single-use product you still use in your daily life.

Then, leverage your commitment into a groundswell by posting a photo of one single-use item — you still use day-to-day — and commit to replacing it with a reusable alternative.

On social media, or via your favorite ways to connect: Tag (ask) three friends and challenge them to do the same!

Examples of things that you can share: a roll of paper towels, a Kombucha bottle, a takeout container, a shampoo bottle, or food scraps destined for a faraway landfill.

If you lodge your action with us, we’ll respond back with some ideas and offers to help you replace more single-use items!

Our coalition is:

Plaine Products: @PlaineProducts

Diaperkind: @diaperkind

Vokashi @vokashi

DeliverZero: @deliverzer0

Reusable Solutions: @ReusableSol

Notes: Please consider tagging all of us (using the hashtag #ClimateActionStartsatHome) so that other folks can find and like your posts thus, amplifying your action!

Adding #climateweek2020 to the end of your post or in your first comment, will make it easy for the Climate Week organizers to find your post.

Together we can find green solutions!

Sincerely,

Vandra Thorburn, Founder & President

Vokashi

For easy composting at home

The goal Vokashi set out to achieve is to decrease the amount of food that ends up in landfills. Most of us don't think about where our food is going when we throw it in the trash, but food waste makes up about 1/3 of the waste in landfills in the US. That's a lot! Vokashi aims to change that by following a Japanese method of fermenting food waste. Vokashi takes your food waste and uses it in a composting system. There are many benefits to composting, but one of the biggest ones is lowering your carbon footprint by decreasing the amount of food waste in landfills, which reduces methane emissions. If you want to learn more about the process or how to get involved with this company, visit Vokashi.com.
