Banning Single-use Plastics

by | Sep 27, 2020 | Community Page | 0 comments

A few nights ago, I was on a NYC Plastic Pollution organizing zoom hosted by Beyond Plastics and NYPIRG. New York States’ #BYOBagNY Law banning single-use plastic bags begin being enforced on October 19!

Even better, I’m primed to call my NY reps to co-sponsor the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act of 2020 (116th Congress H.R. 5845). This law may effectually eliminate single-use plastics in commerce. It would force manufacturers to take responsibility for the plastics that they emit and they would need to convert to reusable systems for product containers or compostable options, where more feasible.

Bag Waste Reduction Law:

“Once fully implemented, New Yorkers will see the benefits of this law almost immediately with less plastic bag litter in neighborhoods, parks and rivers,” says, Judith Enck, Beyond Plastics and former EPA Regional Administrator.

On the heels of these two efforts, I am so pleased to meet up with Plaine Products

Plaine Products

If you’re struggling to find bathroom products in anything but plastic, look no further! Plaine Products is an eco-friendly company who specializes in bath and body products that come in reusable and refillable aluminum bottles. Their products are cruelty free, vegan, and chemical free. They not only support the environment, they also support the economy. Following the Circular Economy model, Aluminum can be recycled over and over again, so after hundreds of uses, if a bottle eventually comes back damaged, it will still have a life as another bottle when it’s recycled. However, when plastic is recycled the material is downgraded so it can only be recycled a few times before it has to be sent to the landfill. Plaine Products covers the cost of sending back your empty bottles when you order a refill. Make the switch today or learn more about their company and products!

Vokashi

For easy composting at home

The goal Vokashi set out to achieve is to decrease the amount of food that ends up in landfills. Most of us don't think about where our food is going when we throw it in the trash, but food waste makes up about 1/3 of the waste in landfills in the US. That's a lot! Vokashi aims to change that by following a Japanese method of fermenting food waste. Vokashi takes your food waste and uses it in a composting system. There are many benefits to composting, but one of the biggest ones is lowering your carbon footprint by decreasing the amount of food waste in landfills, which reduces methane emissions. If you want to learn more about the process or how to get involved with this company, visit Vokashi.com.
